Creative Networks

Matt Forsythe

  • Once couldn't afford a potato. Such is the life of the illustrator.
  • Story boarder for Adventure Time
  • Described the storyboarding process - and showed us some exclusive storyboard footage
  • Style spotted by cartoon network, one of his characters was found in a sketch for adventure time - he enjoyed this greatly.

Cameron Stewart

  • "NO JOB IS TOO SMALL"
  • Self Taught
  • got his big break after he used to reline other artists pencil lines (when he wasn't supposed to, but it ended up looking better)
  • Comic artist - been pigeonholed with a style - can be a negative as he is sometimes not considered for stuff he'd really like to work on. The image above is a test image he did for Fight Club 2 to prove that he was capable of delivering more than what they thought was his style.
  • Working on Batgirl with Babs Tarr
Babs Tarr

  • Did an illustration degree
  • Previously did a lot of tourist-type paintings to sell.
  • Illustrates Batgirl  which Cameron stewart writes and lays out
  • Adapts her style to what she's doing - did a lot of 'fan art' of comic characters but also had a style suitable for fashion illustration
  • Is up to date with styles, fashion and experience as a woman and can include this in her work!

Laura Callaghan

Laura Callaghan is a London based, Irish illustrator, & previous Illustration editor of Oh Comely magazine.

I really dig Callaghan's style, as it's mostly focused around fashionable, cool, tough, bitch-faced women. Something I really enjoy drawing myself. I love the way she can create characters and worlds in an image, clearly she considers the personality of the character she's drawing, it really adds to the image.

Her work is really appealing to me, and I assume edgy/alternative teenage - young adult girls. She has done advert illustrations for Urban Outfitters, and articles on beauty habits.

The images she makes are busy, but not in a bad way. They are filled with information and pattern. I find it makes her images really exciting to look at as each time you look you find something new in the picture.

There is perceptive and three dimensional suggestions but a lot of the colours are 2D. This flat colour and pattern adds to the edginess of the characters, I think it's really cool. There's enough going on that the images don't need more than flat colours.
