Laura Callaghan is a London based, Irish illustrator, & previous Illustration editor of Oh Comely magazine.
I really dig Callaghan's style, as it's mostly focused around fashionable, cool, tough, bitch-faced women. Something I really enjoy drawing myself. I love the way she can create characters and worlds in an image, clearly she considers the personality of the character she's drawing, it really adds to the image.
Her work is really appealing to me, and I assume edgy/alternative teenage - young adult girls. She has done advert illustrations for Urban Outfitters, and articles on beauty habits.
The images she makes are busy, but not in a bad way. They are filled with information and pattern. I find it makes her images really exciting to look at as each time you look you find something new in the picture.
There is perceptive and three dimensional suggestions but a lot of the colours are 2D. This flat colour and pattern adds to the edginess of the characters, I think it's really cool. There's enough going on that the images don't need more than flat colours.
